Laos Accommodation

Planning to travel to Laos for a short visit, for work or for leisure? Whatever it is for or however long you plan to stay, one thing that you might want to think about before heading out is your accommodation in Laos. Laos Accommodation will introduce where to stay in Laos, as well as some recommended hotels.

Where to Stay in Laos

Hotels

The standard hotels generally provide air conditioning, TV, hot water and other equipment. Hotels that go for the lower end of the price range generally have small rooms with public bathrooms and overall cleanliness; hotels in the middle price range have private bathrooms and spacious and bright rooms; hotels in the high-end price range have personalized services with refrigerators and shower facilities. In major areas like Luang Prabang, there are many top hotels on the banks of the Mekong River, with exquisite and luxurious décor, soft and delicate fabric furniture, and private terraces facing the river.

Homestay guest house

Homestay is more popular than hotels, which are more expensive. Accommodation conditions vary, but most of them are still different from the facilities of mid-range and high-end hotels. The beds you sleep on may only be made of mats and mosquito nets; you may not have hot water for bathing; you may have water from the well to wash your body; the food is very simple, and sticky rice is your main staple. But staying in a homestay gives you a better experience of the local life in Laos.

Hostel

Usually referred to as a hotel with simple facilities, hostels generally have a small number of rooms and are found throughout Laos, with prices fluctuating depending on the season. In addition to providing basic beds, those with better bathing conditions have showers, while those with poorer conditions may only have cold water, which is sufficient in the lowlands of Laos. Those with air conditioning and TV facilities are more expensive, so choose according to your needs.

Resort

Not a "resort" in the traditional sense, resorts in Laos are similar to hotels in that they offer sleeping and dining, and rarely have separate areas for recreation or sports. Resorts are more common on the outskirts of Luang Prabang and are not as accessible as hotels, but the views are superb. With fresh air, a break from the hustle and bustle of the crowds, plus unobstructed views of Laos, resorts are a great choice if you're staying in Laos for a while, or for a family trip.

Accommodation areas

  • Luang Prabang area: Luang Prabang is full of hotels, mainly concentrated along the banks of the Mekong River, in the foreigner streets and near Soulignavongsa Road. There are homestays loved by backpackers that are cheap at a few US dollars, and the ones in the side streets are a bit cheaper than the accommodations along the river. The lower-end priced hotels and high-class hotels scatter along the Mekong River and in the nearby alleys. The higher priced ones are usually closer to the river with air conditioning, private bathrooms, terraces, hammocks, etc. The lower priced ones are farther from the river, but quiet. The hotels have different styles, including Southeast Asian style, Lao colonial architecture, modern Chinese style and so on.
  • Vientiane area: Homestays are especially common, and there are many hotels of various grades, concentrated on Thanon Setthathilat Road, Fa Ngum Road along the river and the middle area. The prices of different grades of hotels vary greatly, depending on the availability of hot water, electric fans or air conditioning equipment, the availability of private bathrooms, etc. There are also hotels that rent beds, the price is quite low, basically under 10 USD.
  • Vang Vieng area: Hostels are located on Thanon Luang Prabang Road and along the river, and the number of hostels is obviously increasing at the moment, so travellers do not have to worry about finding a place to stay. The hotels near the Nam Song River are a bit more expensive, but they vary in terms of amenities, from fans and mosquito nets to air conditioners, showers, and even local specialties or French cuisine. They are usually without the luxury of a lobby, but with a warm and inviting decor. In more remote areas, resorts are also common.
  • Si Phan Don area: Hotels on Don Khong Island are scattered around the pier, with the bridge as the dividing line, with homestays and budget hotels predominating on one side and mid- to high-end hotels on the other. Don Khong Island is also dotted with inns, so if you find a random one to stay in, you will find a comfortable environment. Most of the hotels near the river are bamboo hotels, you can lie in a hammock and enjoy the breeze in the hot summer, and they are usually inexpensive, about 5 USD for one night.

Tips on accommodation

It is recommended to book in advance during peak season; if you like quiet, you can book a hotel in an alley, staying in a hotel along the street, you will usually be woken up by the sound of motorcycles in the early morning; Laos is located in a tropical area, and there are many mosquitoes, so it is recommended to book a room with mosquito nets; some hotels can bargain before staying, but it is not recommended to bargain too much, as Laos itself is still a relatively poor country.

Expenses and payments

A typical stay in guest houses and hostel costs only US$10-15 and may also include breakfast or dinner, low- to mid-range hotels range from about US$15-100, with slight variations depending on facilities and area, while upscale hotels and resorts cost US$50-500, with rooms generally higher than US$100 along the Mekong River or near attractions. Rates in popular tourist areas such as Luang Prabang and Vientiane are higher than in other areas, and accommodation costs during the peak tourist season, November to March, are likewise higher than off-season prices. When paying, it is much more economical to pay in the specified currency than to pay in another currency based on the exchange rate, or in US dollars if the hotel indicates US dollar rates.
