Festivals and Events

  • Boun Pha Wet: This festival is held annually on the 15th day of the waxing moon in the 6th lunar month (around June or July) to celebrate the day when the Buddha descended from heaven to earth. During the festival, people give alms to the monks and participate in various Buddhist activities.
  • Boun Khao Salak: This festival is held on the 15th day of the waxing moon in the 10th lunar month (around November) to celebrate the end of the Buddhist Lent. People offer food to the monks and build sand stupas in the temple.
  • Oudomxay Elephant Festival: This festival is held annually in February and celebrates the role of elephants in Lao culture. The festival includes elephant rides, elephant beauty contests, elephant soccer games, and other elephant-related activities.
  • Boun Bang Fai: This festival is held in May or June and involves the launching of homemade rockets into the sky to ask for rain and good crops. The rockets are decorated with colorful designs and the festival includes music, dancing, and traditional Lao food.
  • Lao New Year: This festival is celebrated across Laos in mid-April and marks the beginning of the Lao calendar. During the festival, people splash water on each other as a symbol of cleansing and renewal.
  • Boat Racing Festival: This festival is held annually in September or October on the Nam Ou River. It involves boat races between different villages, traditional music and dancing, and lots of food and drink.
  • Hmong New Year: This festival is celebrated by the Hmong ethnic group in December or January, marking the end of the harvest season. It includes traditional Hmong music and dance, food, and games such as spinning tops and playing shuttlecock.
  • Boun Khao Padap Din: This festival is held on the 15th day of the waxing moon in the 3rd lunar month (around April) to honor the ancestors and make merit for them. People offer food and alms to the monks, and participate in processions and other religious activities.
  • International Day of the Forest: This event is celebrated annually on March 21st, with various activities taking place in the forests of Oudomxay province to raise awareness about the importance of forest conservation.

  • Visit the Nam Kat Waterfall: The Nam Kat Waterfall is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Oudomxay province. Visitors can take a short hike to the waterfall, relax in the natural pools, and enjoy the stunning scenery.
